Nursing School Finances: Budgeting on a Student Income

Manage Your Money So Money Doesn’t Manage You

Nursing school costs a lot, and working full-time isn’t always doable. Here’s how to manage your finances:

Create a Realistic Budget:

  • Track every expense for one month
  • Categorize: fixed (rent, utilities), variable (groceries, gas), discretionary (entertainment)
  • Identify where you can cut back

Reduce Expenses:

  • Textbooks: Buy used, rent, or use digital versions. Check library reserves.
  • Food: Meal prep on Sundays. Eating out drains budgets fast.
  • Transportation: Carpool to clinical. Use student discounts on public transit.
  • Subscriptions: Cancel what you don’t use. Netflix can wait until graduation.

Increase Income (Without Sacrificing Grades):

  • Part-time work that’s flexible (weekends, evening shifts)
  • Tutoring other students
  • Work-study programs at your school
  • Apply for scholarships and grants (free money!)

Student Loans:

  • Only borrow what you absolutely need
  • Understand interest rates and repayment terms
  • Federal loans usually have better terms than private loans

Emergency Fund: Even $500 saved can prevent a crisis from becoming a catastrophe. Put aside $20-50 per month if possible.

Free Resources:

  • Food pantries (many campuses have them)
  • Free mental health services
  • Student discounts (Amazon Prime, Spotify, gym memberships)

The Goal: Graduate with little debt and the most opportunities. Every dollar you save now equals more freedom later.
